20 YEARS TO BUILD THE MAUSOLEUM!
It took twenty years of work to see this mausoleum finished. As rare as it may seem, President Bourguiba planned and started construction well before his death: since 1963! Located at the end of a solemn 200-meter long alleyway, the building is adorned with marble, gold, as well as olive wood. The Mausoleum of Bourguiba was built in the Arab-Muslim style. Two minarets are also on site. It also has a large golden dome with two smaller green cupolas.
THE BOURGUIBA FAMILY RESTS IN THIS MAUSOLEUM
Located on a side of the Sidi El Mezeri cemetery, separated by an imposing gate, the Mausoleum of Bourguiba shelters not only the deceased president. In fact, his first wife, Mathilde, and the bodies of his parents and brothers rest by his side. In 1978, expansion work was carried out in view of their addition. This allows accommodation of even more family members in additional rooms.
A true place of meditation for the entire Tunisia, it allows the former president to stay in everyone’s minds. It is also a display of architectural art to tourists who do not know the history of the country. In addition to this mausoleum, a museum pays tribute to Habib Bourguiba by presenting various objects of his life … And you can visit this place, as well!
