With its tower where the Tunisian flag is flying, as well as its massive building, the fort reminds that it is one of the oldest and best known throughout the North African region. A must-see building when you come to Monastir, you can get a grasp on its breathtaking view to the coast and its authenticity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A FORTRESS DATING FROM THE YEAR 796<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beside the <a href=\"https:\/\/villa-romana-monastir.com\/en\/mausolee-bourguiba\/\">Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba<\/a>, the Ribat is a place that you must visit. Built in the 8th century, it has undergone many works of enlargement over the dynasties that reigned. Expanding the area, building buttresses, towers, bastions in wartime were the main strategic objectives. Though damaged by earthquakes in the past, the fort still remains standing. Today, visitors can see some towers, the prayer room, the entrance porch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WITH ITS MUSEUM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ribat includes a museum of Islamic arts on one of its floors. You will see a collection of funerary steles, glassware, ceramics, pottery and carved wood. Don&#8217;t miss the gold and silver objects that have managed to stand time and are now exhibited. Many of the works in the museum come from the Great Mosque of Kairouan. They are a set of pieces having crossed the centuries and representing the Tunisian history. True gems.<\/p>\n<p>The entrance fee to Ribat is 7 Dinars for adults (about 2 Euros) and free admission applies for children. Some advice for the parents who will come with their kids: you&#8217;d better carry your children to avoid cluttering with the stroller because there are countless steps, narrow corridors, tunnels (children will have fun).
